From the German perspective, the miracle of Bern. From the Hungarian perspective, a dramatic collapse and at the same time to this day the greatest success in Hungarian football, the World Cup silver medal.

Despite tournament favourites Hungary taking the lead inside the first eight minutes, in the end it was the West Germans who could celebrate with heart and soul. For the first time since the war the German supporters and players could sing their national anthem with raised heads; afterwards started the wonder of the West German economy and the slow decline of Hungarian football... perhaps if the referee had allowed Puskás' second goal to stand, the second half of the 20th century would have turned out differently...
