Puskás still most prolific top-tier goalscorer ever

24 Jan. 2018.

According to world-renowned football statistics association IFFHS, Ferenc Puskás still leads the list of the greatest top-tier goalscorers in football history, on which the first three places all belong to Hungarians.

According to IFFHS, the late Ferenc Puskás, who passed away just over ten years ago, scored 511 goals in the Hungarian and Spanish top tiers during a career which lasted from 1943 until 1966, a record which gives him a commanding lead at the top of the list of most prolific top-tier goalscorers in football history. It's not a small source of pride for us that the second and third spots on the list also belong to Hungarians Imre Schlosser and Gyula Zsengellér respectively, the former having notched 417 goals in the Hungarian and Austrian top flights between 1905 and 1928 and the latter having scored 416 goals in the Hungarian, Italian and Colombian leagues between 1935 and 1952.

The IFFHS website emphasises that while Pelé and Josef Bican scored more goals than Puskás in recorded matches, some of those could not be counted because they hadn't come in top-tier league matches. Three-time World Cup winner with Brazil Pelé scored 514 goals in various league fixtures, some against lower-tier opposition, while Prague-born Czech and Austrian international striker Bican plundered 518 goals. Of the currently-active footballers on the list, Cristiano Ronaldo is in 12th place with Lionel Messi in joint-15th. Portuguese star Ronaldo has scored 373 goals in the Portuguese, English and Spanish leagues since 2002 while Argentine superstar Messi has garnered 361 goals since 2004, all for Barcelona in the Spanish top flight. It is stated on the same webpage that both have a good chance of reaching the top five at least, given that Germany's Gerd Müller and Cameroon's Roger Milla are level in joint fifth on 405 goals.
Let's look at the full list here with the list of outstanding rivals including Ronaldo, Messi and the rest!
