Olivier Giroud wins FIFA Puskás Award

24 Jan. 2018.

The Palladium theatre in London was the venue for the 'The Best' FIFA Football Awards ceremony which recognises the best footballers, coaches and goal over the past year. The FIFA Puskás Award for the goal of the year was contested for the ninth time and this year's winner was Arsenal's France international forward Olivier Giroud.

The evening of Monday 23rd October saw FIFA's gala awards held at the Palladium theatre in London for the first time in its histroy and the first major prize to be announced was the one bearing Ferenc Puskás' name, the winner for his tremendously agile 'scorpion'-style kick to finish off a lightning-fast counter-attack for Arsenal against Crystal Palace in the English Premier League last January.

In answer to the master of ceremonies' question of who they would have voted for, the attending Neymar, Lionel Messi, Frank Lampard and Antonio Conte all confirmed they concurred with the exeprt panel's choice of winner, whereas Cristiano Ronaldo stated he'd have plumped for goalkeeper Oscarine Masuluké's scissors kick.

The FIFA Puskás award winner was decided upon this time by a panel of five former star footballers including former Newcastle United and England great Alan Shearer. They selected a short list of ten goals from the period of autumn 2016 to 2nd July 2017. That list of ten was whittled down to three in the first round of voting, the final three contenders being Venezuela's Under 17 women's international Deyna Castellanos, South Africa's Oscarine Masuluké of Baroka FC, and the eventual winner Giroud who emerged victorious after a second round of voting.
