The secret of the photo on the Prime Minister's wall

25 Sep. 2017.

The Hungarian edition of FourFourTwo magazine has investigated the story of the photograph which hangs on the wall of Prime Minister Viktor Orbán's workroom and which can be seen in protocol photographs of the area. And it doesn't involve just anybody...

Index.hu called it to the public's attention first when they noticed the photograph of a football team on the wall of Prime Minister Viktor Orbán's office and claimed it to be a picture of the 1964 Real Madrid side including Ferenc 'Öcsi' Puskás. FourFourTwo looked into it and discovered the picture is actually of the Real Madrid lineup which faced River Plate of Argentina in a gala friendly match in 1965, held in honour of long-serving player Francisco Gento. That Real Madrid team featured former as well as current players, hence why the likes of Alfredo Di Stéfano and Puskás were pictured together again.

The photo can clearly be seen to have original Spanish text written on it by Puskás' own hand, something distinguishable by the huge letter 'P' which he used. Real Madrid's Hungarian superstar wrote a dedication to his teammate Pedro de Felipe, 17 years his younger, using the following words: "To my good friend and teammate De Felipe, the great centre-back of the future... (indecipherable line), Ferenc Puskás".

De Felipe had made his debut for the first team one year earlier aged 20 years old and played for Real Madrid for eight years, winning the European Cup in 1966, Puskás' last season in the first team, and become five-time league champion and a Spanish Cup winner before departing for Espanyol.

The then young player treasured the signed photograph for many years until 2014 when he added more text to it in Spanish, writing: "To Viktor Orbán, with great love and respect, De Felipe". A year-and-a-half before the former Spanish international footballer's death in April 2016, he presented it to Mr Orbán as a special gift.

And that's the story of how this photo found its way onto the wall of the Hungarian Prime Minister's work room!
