FIFA Puskás Award

Cristiano Ronaldo

Ronaldo, now of Real Madrid, won the award for his long-range goal against Porto in the UEFA Champions League quarter-final second leg on 15th April 2009 while in the colours of Manchester United.

The recipient of the first ever Puskás Award was Portugal’s Cristiano Ronaldo and he was presented with the trophy by Mrs. Ferenc Puskás who was taking part in her first and last Puskás Award ceremony and was escorted up to the podium by Liberian George Weah, the only African player ever to have won the Golden Ball Award. Ronaldo, now of Real Madrid, won the award for his goal against Porto in the UEFA Champions League quarter-final second leg on 15th April 2009 while in the colours of Manchester United.

”As a Real Madrid player I am particularly happy for this recognition because at Real Madrid’s famous sanctum of Sala de Trofeos I have already seen countless times the photographs and other nostalgia relating to Ferenc Puskás and I also know from things I’ve read how great a player he was. The goal was his calling card and I hope people will also remember me in this way”, said Cristiano Ronaldo whose goalscoring prowess and his combed back hairstyle also reminds Madrid supporters of Puskás.
